Client Gate+ and DÁP: end of the Client Gate and the new options

Significant changes will take effect in Hungary's electronic administration system starting 16 January 2025: the current form of the Client Gate (Ügyfélkapu) will be discontinued. In the future, users will have two alternative solutions to choose from: the Client Gate+ (Ügyfélkapu+) and the DÁP (Digital Citizenship Program) mobile application, offering new options for online administration. Both individuals and businesses must consider in advance how they will authenticate themselves when accessing state-provided electronic services in the future — whether through the Client Gate+ or the DÁP.

Client Gate – Why Is It Discontinued?

The current single-factor authentication system of the Client Gate (username and password) is considered outdated and does not meet modern digital security requirements.  The change is aimed at increasing security and modernising public administration IT systems.

Opportunities with Client Gate+

The Client Gate+ is an enhanced version of the Client Gate, using two-factor authentication.  Logging in still requires a username and password, but these are supplemented by a one-time code generated by an authentication application, which must be entered on a smartphone or tablet.

Advantages of Client Gate+

  • Enhanced security through two-factor authentication.
  • A free service requiring only the installation of an authentication app (e.g., NISZ Authenticator, Google Authenticator).

Disadvantages of Client Gate+

  • The QR code-based registration and usage process may be more difficult for older or less tech-savvy users.

DÁP Program: the solution for the future

The “DÁP Mobile Application" was introduced as part of the Digital Citizenship Program.  This modern, smartphone-based solution allows citizens to manage their affairs without the need for a username and password.

Key functions of DÁP

  •  simpler login through biometric authentication (e.g., fingerprint or facial recognition).
  • electronic signature option (which will eventually replace AVDH),allowing the creation of legally certified documents.
  •  integration with government services.

Advantages of DÁP

  •  more convenient to use, as there is no need for a separate authentication app.
  • modern technology that meets the expectations of the digital age.

Disadvantages of DÁP

For those who do not have a smartphone capable of biometric authentication or do not wish to use this technology, transitioning may pose difficulties.

What do companies and individuals need to do to use Client Gate+ and DÁP?

Both individuals and businesses must consider how they will authenticate themselves when using state-provided electronic services after 16 January 2025 (whether through Client Gate+ or DÁP). If they choose Client Gate+, they must decide which authentication app they will use, and whether they intend to take advantage of the additional services offered by DÁP.

To ensure a smooth transition, it is advisable to register for the Client Gate+ or DÁP service in advance.
